Once a thriving agricultural hub in Pujan district southern Sierra Leone, Malen chiefdom has become a symbol of resistance and resilience particularly for women whose life were upended in March 2011.
"Not only are they taking over our ancestral lands, they are expanding or replanting palm trees everywhere without leaving us a small space of land to even plant cassava to survive for our families," a woman from Dehane village says.
