Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will become a majority owner of eight Serbian agriculture corporations that own 9,000 hectares of land and will lease an additional 14,000 hectares of arable land in Serbia for EUR 250 per hectare per year.
Abu Dhabi-based Elite Agro LLC, a cereal-producing company, recently acquired 100 percent ownership of AL Rawafed Holding, making the Arab company the owner of 12,000 hectares of arable land in Serbia and joining the group of leading domestic landowners.
The billions of cubic meters of Nile water, rainwater, and treated sewage water that have been pumped into Egypt's recent large-scale desert agriculture projects have come at the expense of the country's small farmers.

Serbian farmlands that were recently cultivated, used and improved by 80 farming families are now being leased to UAE-based companies.
Gulf agribusiness companies found their panacea in Egypt, which is prioritizing investment in large-scale, modernized farming to export crops over pursuing strategic crop cultivation and traditional farming methods in the Nile Valley and Delta.
Tensions are bubbling up at Arizona alfalfa farms as water becomes a top commodity. Local farmers say that their wells have dried up since since an Emirati alfalfa farm moved in.
"The UAE is looking not just at land [acquisitions] but developing the whole supply chain," says Nicholas Lodge, managing partner at Clarity, a consultancy that advises on investments in agricultural industries.
Serbia has neither clear rules of the game nor a development strategy for the agricultural sector, which is why the government confuses itself with Gulf State investors in secret meetings and makes real deals under the grain.
The desert states of the Gulf are changing tack in their multi-billion dollar search for food security.
A 20,000 ha tranche of Serbian farmland bought by an Abu Dhabi firm should be providing a substantial amount of the UAE's food within the next five years.
