A South Korean investor has begun building two corn cultivation-related plants -- one for corn germination and the other for corn processing -- in Pohuwatu district, a provincial official said.

Gorontalo Vice Governor Gusnar Ismail said here on Tuesday, the South Korean investor, PT Harim Group, was also planning to build six silos with a combined storage capacity of 6,000 tons to support its corn exporting activity.

The company's corn germinating plant was being constructed in Patilinggio sub district to enable local corn farmers to have easier access to corn seeds.

"Making seeds available is the beginning of the production process in agriculture, especially in corn cultivation. Making seeds available is actually the government's responsibility," he said.

He said the building of the two plants was based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in the past by the Gorontalo provincial government and the South Korean government.

The projects were scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009 and become operational at the beginning of 2010.

However, some physical improvement to the plant was still needed in the pre-seed planting facility and this was the Pohuwato sub district administration's responsibility.

Meanwhile, the provincial government was responsible for providing the project sites and seed cultivation area .

(Note: In May 2009, the Gorontal provincial government published a report saying that it was making the maximum amount of land available for the Harim Group).
