Bidwells Agribusiness is to put up a speaker at a 'Land Grab' public conference in Washington, DC. 'Land Grab: The Race for the World's Farmland' is the title of the conference, focusing on the recent race to secure large areas of arable farmland around the world.

Bidwells will be represented by Carl Atkin, Head of Agribusiness Research, covering the topic of investment in farmland and farming in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Bidwells Agribusiness has become specialist consultants in this area over the past few years acknowledged as one of the foremost experts in this area.

Conference organisers says: "The world is experiencing a grain rush. With increasing frequency, wealthy, food-importing countries as well as the private sector are investing in farmland overseas. This conference examines the patterns and motivations of such investment, considers the implications for investors, host countries, and food security, and features case studies from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the former Soviet Union."

Other conference speakers include Gary R. Blumenthal, President and CEO, World Perspectives Inc; David Hallam, Deputy Director, Trade and Markets Division, Food and Agriculture Organization; and Chido Makunike, Agricultural Exporter and Consultant (Senegal).

This event has been organized by the Wilson Center's Asia Program and is cosponsored by the Center's Africa Program; Environmental Change and Security Program; Comparative Urban Studies Project; and the Program on Science, Technology, America, and the Global Economy.

Land Grab: The Race for the World's Farmland is on 5 May 2009, from 9am to 1pm and will include a live webcast. Visit www.wilsoncenter.org/index.cfm?topic_id=1462&fuseaction=topics.event&event_id=517903
