Welcome to the online discussion on the World Bank report, jointly hosted by the Global Donor Platform and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).
Dear colleagues
On behalf of the entire report team, I would like to welcome you to the eDiscussion on this highly relevant topic. Given the impact which large scale land acquisitions can have for the lives of millions of rural poor and the development of many countries’ agricultural sector, we think it is very appropriate to have an open forum to discuss how country governments, private entrepreneurs, civil society and farmers’ organization, as well as development partners can deal with increased global demand for land in a way that protects the rights of the poor and contributes to their social and economic development.
We are delighted that the Global Donor Platform and IISD have agreed to host this discussion and fortunate to have very experienced moderators who will be able to provide input into the discussion and summarize conclusions. We hope that the discussion will provide a forum to bring together a wide variety of ideas and experiences and very much look forward to a lively debate.

The eDiscussion will take place from 13 September to 8 October.
You will be able to post comments and recommendations during the four-week period. In addition, representatives from the different stakeholder groups will moderate focused discussions on recommendations for next steps:

Reactions to the report; general thoughts on the roles for civil society | Day 1
Public sector: 20 – 24 Sep
Private sector: 27 Sep – 1 Oct
Objectives
To gather inputs on recommendations for next steps from the perspective of key stakeholder groups: civil society, public sector (governments, donors and international organisations) and private sector. The outcomes will be considered at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s Annual Meetings 9 – 10 Oct 2010.
