The European Commission is giving five Eastern European countries two months to bring their agricultural land purchasing rules in line with the European Union standards or it may pursue legal action.

The European Commission started legal action against Hungary over the right of foreigners to buy agricultural land, saying restrictions on such purchases violated the European Union's principle of free movement of capital.

Une loi hongroise stipule que les contrats d'usufruit de terres agricoles conclus entre 1994 et 2001 seront annulés le 1er mai 2014. Plusieurs centaines d'agriculteurs autrichiens, allemands, italiens et néerlandais seraient concernés, pour plus de 200 000 hectares.
Le Parlement hongrois a adopté, le 21 juin 2013, une loi sur les terres agricoles, qui impose notamment des restrictions aux étrangers pour l'acquisition de foncier.
