On November 12, 2011, Oromo nationals in Berlin, Germany, staged a peaceful demonstration to protest against Meles Zenawi’s sale of farmlands in Oromia to domestic and transnational corporations, to local and international land speculators, and to rich individuals and foreign governments. The land speculators buy up the farmlands, and sell them for profits to other speculators. They are daily flooding Oromia to grab lands from Oromo farmers. At the same time, this march was also to show solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street Movement (OWS Movement) in Germany.

In the name of investment, the Tigrayan regime of Meles Zenawi has placed Oromia under the market forces of globalization so as to sell or lease its fertile lands to international land-grabbers. To facilitate the transfer of lands to the land-grabbers, the colonial regime of Meles Zenawi has been violently evicting the Oromo villagers from their homes and farmlands. In this way, the Oromo people are dispossessed of their ancestral land, the land they have lived on for generations. And, the Oromo people’s lives have been threatened by the thefts,

plunders, grabs of their land and resources. The local people are denied access to their fertile and high-valued lands, and forced to marginal lands with less yield or no yields. The consequences of these are poverty and hunger.

Land for any society is an identity, food security, and livelihood. Hence, the grabbing of the Oromo land by the international land sharks is to put the Oromo identity, their food security, and their livelihoods at a risk of destruction.

In this march of protest against land-grabbing in Oromia, the Oromo nationals in Berlin carried the OLF flag as their identity, and the placards that read Oromia, to show their country of origin to the world and another placards that read Stop Land Grab in Oromia. The Oromo march at the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement in Berlin was to expose to the world community Zenawi’s crime of selling Oromo lands to domestic and transnational land sharks, and his heinous crime against the Oromo people and their country, Oromia.
