Russia's state-run news agency reports that a delegation from North Korea held talks with authorities in Russia's Far East on leasing land to grow vegetables and grain.

According to the RIA Novosti on Thursday, North Korea plans to rent several hundred thousand hectares of land in the Amur region, which has about 200-thousand hectares of idle land in regional, municipal or private ownership.

The news agency quoted a Russian official as saying that authorities in Pyeongyang are planning an unprecedented agricultural project to create a farm in the Far East in an attempt to address that nation's food shortages.
Meanwhile, Amur region minister Igor Gorevoi said that the land must not be abandoned and that the newly-formed North Korean company must be registered in the Amur region.
