Promoting Responsible International Investment in Agriculture:

Roundtable concurrent with the 64th United Nations General Assembly

The Government of Japan, in association with the World Bank, FAO, IFAD and UNCTAD, hosted a Roundtable "Promoting Responsible International Investment in Agriculture" on Wednesday 23 September in the Millennium Hotel, New York.

The meeting was intended to initiate a coordinated global response to the growing trend of major agricultural investment associated with acquisition of rights to land and related resources, particularly in the developing world.

Representative stakeholders from 31 Governments and 13 organizations attended the meeting. High-level representatives including Dr Jacques Diouf , Director General of FAO, Dr Kanayo F Nwanze, President of IFAD, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Managing Director of World Bank, Ms Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP, H.E. Kwesi Ahwoi, Minister of Food and Agriculture of Ghana, Mr Alonzo Fulgham, Acting Administrator of USAID, made opening remarks. Mr Kenji Hiramatsu, Deputy Director for Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, chaired the roundtable.

After discussions, the participants agreed to work together to develop principles and international framework to promote responsible international investment in agriculture.
