Rabo Farm, Poleko and Van Kessel sign letter of intent during the state visit of the Dutch King and Queen to Poland

Amsterdam - Warsaw, 26 June  2014

JOINT PRESS RELEASE

The three parties have expressed their intention to strengthen the co-operation in the field of reshaping and draining agricultural land belonging to Rabo Farm in the Zulawy delta in the North of Poland, close to Gdansk.  This is aimed at unlocking the huge agricultural potential of farms as well as increasing and stabilising agricultural production. Efficient water use is essential to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability of farms.

The letter of intent marking the start of further co-operation between Rabo Farm, Poleko Budownictwo and Van Kessel Sport en Cultuurtechniek was signed on Wednesday 25 June 2014 during a state visit to Poland by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at the invitation of President Bronislaw Komorowski. The reshaping and drainage project coincides with the government of the Netherlands’ top sector policies (water, and agri & food),  which play a pivotal role in the bilateral relations with Poland. The Polish and Dutch nations have been working together on water control and agricultural production in the Zulawy delta since the 12th century.

The three parties have just successfully finalised a pilot land reshaping and drainage project for 450 hectares of agricultural land using 300 kilometres of drain pipes at the Nowinki farm in the Zulawy delta, an investment of the Rabo Farm Europe Fund. Given the success of this pilot, the parties have agreed to continue with more drainage projects in this area with the aim of draining around 500 hectares per year from 2014 to 2017. The total investment amounts to PLN 30 million, and the total additional drained agricultural area to 2,100 hectares, with the use of 800 kilometres of drain pipes.

The advantages of reshaping and draining agricultural land include agricultural productivity improvement, more efficient use of water resources and hence minimisation of agricultural crop production volatility. These are essential steps in responding to the challenges facing global food security.

The Rabo Farm funds’ main investment strategy is to unlock the huge agricultural potential of European farms by providing them with an injection of capital. The current funds’ focus is on Central and Eastern EU countries (Poland and Romania) where farms are leased out, preferably, to local leaseholders. Rabo Farm is part of Bouwfonds Investment Management, the real asset manager of the Rabobank Group. Rabo Farm also leverages the global network and expertise of Rabobank, a leading food and agri bank.

Agricultural Investment Manager Rabo Farm is serving investors  in farms (e.g. farmland and other farm assets, e.g. buildings, silos, etc.) and in improvements to these farms (e.g. land consolidation, water management systems, soil improvement, building renovation, etc.) as well as in agricultural production (predominantly arable crops, e.g. grains, oilseeds, etc.) on these farms. This project is an example of how Dutch Van Kessel Sport en Cultuurtechniek, part of construction company VolkerWessels, and Polish Poleko Budownictwo add value to farms by bringing in their respective expertise, i.e. drainage and land reshaping.

These activities contribute toward the development of a vibrant local agricultural sector and of the communities in which these activities take place. They will generate positive returns for numerous stakeholders, from farmers and investors to local communities.
