Karuturi flower farm workers go on strike

Business came to a halt at the expansive Karuturi flower farm after its over 3,000 workers downed tools demanding their july salaries. During the strike along moi south road, the irate workers held hostage one of the senior managers demanding their salaries as armed police officers watched. Workers lamented over unpaid debts to suppliers, a situation that has led to flowers wilting due to lack of chemicals and fertilizers. According to the farm's chief shop-steward Samson Ounda, the farm was in financial crisis and unable to pay salaries and the statutory deductions. The farm's chief financial officer Ragu Maragh however said that they were addressing the situation and would pay the workers in the coming week. The farm, formerly Sher Agencies, had a daily production of 1m roses but this has dropped to around 100,000 due to the ongoing crisis that began in the year 2011.
